APM Project Management Training FAQs

What is APM in project management?

APM stands for the Association for Project Management, the chartered membership organisation for the project profession. It provides qualifications, training standards, events and professional development for people working in project, programme and portfolio roles.

What is the difference between APM PFQ and APM PMQ?

APM PFQ is an entry-level qualification that gives a fundamental awareness of project management terminology and principles. APM PMQ is a broader qualification designed for people already working in project environments who want to demonstrate knowledge across the key areas of project management.

Which APM course is best for beginners?

For most beginners, APM Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ) is the best starting point. It is designed to build a broad understanding of project management and is well suited to people who are new to projects or want a recognised introduction to the profession.

Who should take the APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ)?

PMQ is aimed at project professionals who want to demonstrate knowledge and understanding across all key areas of project management. APM says candidates are most likely to be working in a project environment with around two to three years of experience or undertaking a project management apprenticeship or degree.

Is APM PMQ equivalent to PRINCE2?

They are different rather than directly equivalent. PRINCE2 is a methodology-based qualification, while APM PMQ is broader and covers a wide range of project management knowledge without focusing on one specific method. That makes APM PMQ useful for professionals working across different project approaches, including Agile and structured delivery environments. This distinction is consistent with APM’s description of PMQ as a broad qualification that does not focus on a specific methodology.

Are APM qualifications recognised in the UK?

Yes. APM is the chartered membership organisation for the project profession, and its qualifications are recognised across UK project environments. PFQ and PMQ are both established qualifications used by individuals and employers to build project knowledge and support professional development.

Can APM training help with career progression?

Yes. APM states that PMQ is designed to help candidates advance their career, enhance employability, and develop the confidence to manage and lead projects more effectively. PFQ is also a useful stepping stone for people who want to build foundational knowledge before progressing further.

Are these courses accredited?

Yes - our APM qualifications are delivered in partnership with APMG International, the official exam board.

Do I need experience for the PFQ?

No experience is required. It’s designed as an accessible foundation course.

Can I take PMQ without PFQ first?

Yes - if you have relevant experience, you can go directly to the PMQ.
