Microsoft Support for Windows 10 is Ending...

2025 is already shaping up to be a year for change, and Microsoft’s plans for change will affect us all…

Support ending for 365 Apps

As of October 14, 2025, Microsoft will end support for Microsoft 365 Office apps on Windows 10, aligning with the operating system's end-of-support date. This change means that all users must upgrade to Windows 11 to continue receiving updates and support for essential productivity tools.

Ushering in Windows 11

Microsoft has begun distributing Windows 11 24H2 to user devices as the company enters the next stage of the operating system's rollout.  Large organisations need not worry at this stage because devices managed by IT departments won't be updated. However, users with an eligible machine running the Home or Pro version of Windows 11 will eventually get an automatic upgrade. A convenient time can be chosen, and the update can be postponed, but it will be installed at some point in the future.

What is Windows 11? Windows 11 is a new Windows experience, that Microsoft says is “bringing you closer to what you love”. With intuitive navigation and easy organisation, Windows 11 has a whole new look, more apps, and efficient ways to be creative and productive.

Windows 11 and AI

Windows 11 and Microsoft Copilot are becoming increasingly integrated, offering users a more cohesive AI-enhanced computing experience. Copilot, accessible directly from the Windows 11 taskbar, serves as an AI assistant designed to help users with tasks such as summarising content, generating images, and providing suggestions.

Additionally, Microsoft is testing AI-powered Windows search capabilities that allow users to search local files using natural language, further embedding AI functionalities into the Windows 11 experience.

For users, this deep integration signifies a shift towards an operating system more reliant on AI, ultimately aiming to enhance efficiency and user satisfaction. However, there are also potential drawbacks, including compatibility issues, privacy concerns, performance limitations, user experience challenges, and cost implications.

Implications for Users

  • Functionality Risks: Post-October 14, 2025, while Office apps may still function on Windows 10, they will no longer receive security updates or technical support, leading to potential performance and reliability issues over time.

  • Hardware Considerations: Upgrading to Windows 11 requires meeting specific hardware requirements, including support for TPM 2.0.

  • Cost Implications: Many older machines may not meet the required Hardware standards, necessitating hardware upgrades or replacements.

Extended Security Updates

For users unable to transition to Windows 11 by the deadline, Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates (ESUs). Consumers can purchase an additional year of security updates, while businesses have the option to extend support for up to three years at varying costs.

Checklist to be Ready:

Check Windows 11 specs and Computer Requirements

Your device must be running Windows 10, version 2004 or later, to upgrade. Free updates are available through Windows Update in Settings>Update and Security.

Assess Hardware Compatibility:

Evaluate your current systems to determine if they meet Windows 11's hardware requirements. Tools like Microsoft's PC Health Check can assist in this assessment.

Decide on AI:

Copilot+ PCs are a class of Windows 11 devices powered by a neural processing unit (NPU) capable of performing 40+ trillion operations per second (TOPS). (An NPU is a specialised computer chip for AI-intensive processes like real-time translations and image generation.)  For most scenarios, customers will need to acquire new hardware to run Copilot+ PCs experiences.

Plan for Upgrades:

If your existing hardware is incompatible, consider budgeting for new devices that support Windows 11, to ensure uninterrupted access to your Microsoft 365 apps.

Assess Training Needs:

Transitioning to a new operating system can present challenges. Skilltec can deliver bespoke training to your organisation, to help teams adapt to Windows 11, ensuring a smooth and efficient transition.

The upcoming end of support for Office apps on Windows 10 underscores the importance of proactive planning. By assessing hardware needs, planning necessary upgrades, and investing in training, organisations can maintain productivity and security in the evolving technological landscape.
